Essential Gear for Drum Practice

You do not need a full drum kit to begin learning. To develop proper technique and timing, you only require three items: a practice pad, a pair of drumsticks, and a metronome.

1. The Practice Pad

A pad allows you to develop stick control quietly. A dedicated pad provides drum-like rebound and is definitely a worthwhile investment.

  • Budget Options: Donner or Stagg pads.

  • Recommended: Evans RealFeel or Vic Firth Stockpad. These are industry standards (£25 - £35) available from UK retailers like Drum Shack, Graham Russell, or Drum Central. (Check second hand listings for better deals).

  • In Class We Use:

    • Meinl Marshmallow Pad (Large)

    • DW Smart Practice Pad (14”)

    • Billy Hyde Natural Rebound Pad (8”)

2. Drumsticks

Stick with reputable brands like Vater, Pro Mark, or Vic Firth. Cheaper sticks are often made of lightweight woods that make executing rolls and rebound strokes more difficult.

Choosing a Size:

  • 7A: Light and thin; ideal for smaller hands, jazz, or younger players.

  • 5A: The industry standard. Best balance for learning fundamental strokes.

  • 5B: Thicker and heavier; useful for larger hands, heavier styles, or building strength.

In Class We Use: Only Hickory sticks. Specifically the Vater Los Angeles 5A, Promark RAW 5A Forward, and Vater 2B. I personally use the Vic Firth Freestyle 5A.

3. The Metronome

Timing is a critical skill for a drummer. A metronome provides the metrics needed to log your progress and massively improves the efficiency of your practice.

Hardware vs. Apps

  • Digital Metronomes: Small units like the Korg MA2 (£15) are often louder than phone speakers and serve as a physical prompt to actually use a click.

  • Free Apps: MetroTimer is excellent and includes a "voice" setting that counts 1, 2, 3, 4, which is often more helpful than a plain click.

Advanced Tools (In Class)

  • GapClick: Developed by Benny Greb; excellent for training your internal clock and "groove."

  • Drummer ITP: Provides feedback on accuracy and includes rudiment workouts.

  • RhythmBot: Generates scalable sheet music to develop the sensation of sight reading in real time.
